The first week
of every returning October, it’s time again for the Valais Autumn
Fair, which used to be called “Comptoir de Martigny”.
From Martigny you can reach the French holiday resort of Chamonix in
a one-and-a-half hour trip via the audaciously built narrow-gauge
tracks of the “Mont Blanc Express”. The “Sankt Bernhard Express”
takes you from Martigny to Orsières, from where you will continue by
bus through an awe-inspiring mountain landscape to the Great St.
Bernard mountain hostel. Martigny is also a great transport hub to
easily reach famous winter sports areas like “4 Vallées”,
“Portes-du-Soleil” and Ovronnaz.
Excursions
Martigny’s history stretches back two thousand years: Celtic tribes,
the Romans and Napoleon’s army have all left behind traces. Martigny
offers its visitors a superb, restored amphitheatre, Roman thermal
baths, temples and living quarters. Martigny later became
Switzerland’s first diocese. Nowadays, the historic districts of La
Bâtiaz and Vieux-Bourg, featuring many religious and non-religious
buildings, are worth a visit.
Fondation Pierre Gianadda obviously is Martigny’s main
attraction from a cultural point of
view. In addition to the Gallo-Roman Museum it houses a car museum
and every year two top-class exhibitions dedicated to world-famous
artists.
The Saint Bernard Dog Museum is a must-do. The
museum is located in the old armoury, adjacent to the Roman
amphitheatre. The museum is home to an array of artifacts and
documents that tell the story of the Great St. Bernard Hospice and
Pass. The legendary Saint Bernard dogs are obviously one of the
museum’s main attractions !
